چکیده

• Numerous workers have investigated the effects of stimulating the vagus nerves upon ventricular contractility in the mammalian heart. Many of these investigators" concluded that vagal stimulation has little or no influence on the contractility of the ventricles, while others^ deduced that it elicits a negative inotropic effect. Currently, the former opinion appears to be almost universally accepted. However, certain experimental observations encouraged us to reinvestigate this problem. It was found that electrical stimulation of the distal ends of the cervical vagi provokes a more marked increase of coronary flow during systole than during diastole in the paced, canine heart which is perfused at constant pressure. In other experiments, it was observed that the negative inotropic effect upon the canine ventricles which is elicited by stimulation of the carotid body chemoreceptors is abolished by bilateral cervical vagotomy." These observations suggest that the vagus nerves may play a definite role in the nervous regulation of the contractility of the ventricular myocardium in the mammalian heart. The experiments described in this paper confirm this hypothesis. A preliminary report of some of these experi-

The effects of halothane on the interactions between myocardial contractility, aortic impedance, and left ventricular performance. IV. Haemodynamic responses to vagus nerve stimulation.

The effects of electrical stimulation of the vagus nerves have been studied in anaesthetized dogs, before and after bilateral interruption of the cardiac sympathetic nerves. During constant heart rates, maintained by right atrial pacing, vagus nerve stimulation caused small but significant reductions of myocardial contractility, but these were minor compared with the effects of other negative i...

Changes of ventricular impulse formation during carotid pressure in man.

THERE appears to be general agreement that in the mammalian heart vagal stimulation has no effect on ventricular contractility. This was demonstrated by Drury2 who used the myocardiograph of Cushny and was confirmed by optical determination of the intraventricular pressure of the artificially driven heart; when a cardiac alternans existed and weak faradic stimulation of the cardiac sympathetic ...

Vagus nerve stimulation in the treatment of nervous system disease: a review article

The vagus nerve (VN), the longest cranial nerve and an essential part of the parasympathetic system, connects the central nervous system to respiratory, cardiovascular, immune, gastrointestinal, and endocrine systems and is involved in the maintenance of homeostasis by controlling these systems. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is related to any method that would stimulate the vagal nerve via elec...

Effect of enhanced contractility on the left ventricular response to vagus nerve stimulation in dogs.

In the canine isovolumetric left ventricle preparation, stimuli were applied to the efferent end of a transected cervical vagus nerve. The changes in left ventricular systolic pressure in response to vagal stimulation were compared under control conditions and when ventricular contractility was enhanced by various kinds of inotropic stimulation—left stellate ganglion stimulation, paired pacing,...

Vagus nerves and baroreceptor control of ventricular performance.

• Several recent studies have shown that stimulation of the carotid sinus baroreceptors exerts a reflex, negative inotropic effect upon ventricular performance." Since it was generally accepted that the vagus nerves do not directly influence the ventricular myocardium," it was assumed that the efferent fibers of the carotido-ventricular reflex traversed sympathetic pathways exclusively. In many...
